Working in the Danish Life Science industry

'We are empowered by our management, we are trusted that we do our work as long as we deliver at the end of the day'.

Meet manager Bettina Gaspar-Blaudschun from Germany and get inspired by her experience with working in a Danish work environment within one of the strongest Life Science clusters in Europe.

Time to spare.Money to spend

Time to spare. Money to spend

As an expat in Denmark you’ll most probably experience work/life balance like you’ve never experienced before.

A number of studies have shown that many Europeans have to make sacrifices between their career and their family life or personal time. If you want more ‘out of office’ time, your career advancement and bank account can suffer. For example: Half of British workers regret missing their children growing up, and one in three British women would take a pay cut to get more time with their families*. Does it have to be this way?

In Denmark you can have an interesting job, a great career and be an attentive parent. A late meeting in Denmark will probably last until 17:00. That’s when it is likely to start in many other countries. Most of the 67.000 expats in Denmark find this style the most appealing thing about working here**.

So welcome to a country where a great career goes hand in hand with time to spare. For the cherry on top, the salary level is high compared to most other countries in the world. Of course, the cost of living is high too, but relatively speaking, most expats typically experience a higher quality of living in Denmark than in their home country. So not only will you have extra time to spare, but money as well.

that you earn the right to 5 weeks paid holiday after 12 months of employment?

A work culture to thrive in

A work culture to thrive in

In sharp contrast to many other countries, you would have a hard time finding a manager in Denmark who thinks she or he has all the answers. They know better than that.

Danish working culture is centered on flexibility and teamwork, where input from all employees is not only valued, but encouraged. There is little hierarchy, and the distance from the most senior manager to the most junior employee is generally very short – both in number of steps and access.

That’s why competent employees tend to thrive in Denmark. An overwhelming number of our expats find the work culture here appealing. We are, however, the first ones to admit that working in Denmark isn’t for everyone. If you like managers who are somewhat of a “know-it-all” and if you like being told what to do at all time, then you’re not going to enjoy yourself here.

In Denmark, your voice will be heard and your opinions matter. Your ideas are welcomed. And so are you.

DID YOU KNOW:
that only 11 % of Danes believe the manager has all the answers? Compare that with 73 % of Poles. Or 69 % of Germans.

Family too

Family too

Have to pick up your kids from kindergarten before 16:30? No problem. Your manager may very well have to do the same thing every second day.

Not having to worry about spending enough time with your family is a big reason why so many expats say the quality of life in Denmark is very high*. The childcare opportunities are also highly appreciated.

What about maternity leave, you may ask. Well, in Denmark we use the term parental leave. A total of 52 paid weeks – yes, that’s right – is distributed between the mother and father. The mother gets 4 weeks before the due date, 14 weeks after. The father gets 2 weeks after, and then the parents get another 32 weeks to be distributed freely between them. You probably won’t find more generous benefits in many other countries.

DID YOU KNOW:

that you are entitled to take 1 paid day of leave on the first day on which your child is sick?

A different kind of commute

Copenhagen - the bike capital

Designated bicycle lanes, bicycle bridges and replacing car parking with bicycle parking are some of the reasons why Copenhagen is one of the most acknowledged bike capitals in the world.

Riding a bike is often faster and more convenient than driving a car. The benefits of keeping healthy and reduced pollution are another two obvious reasons. The municipality of Copenhagen has an ambition to make the city C02 neutral by 2025 – an ambitious but yet reachable target.

A clean environment is valued by many of the expats living in Denmark*. Together with a good work/life balance, social benefits, a good welfare system and great opportunities for a career, it should not come as a surprise that 86 % of the expats in Denmark enjoy living here.

That’s why the biggest risk you run when moving to Denmark is probably staying longer than you planned.

DID YOU KNOW:
that Copenhagen has been voted the most liveable city by Monocle several times?
